Information for Community Figures

WHY are you doing this study?

In the UK, alcohol related problems are increasing and are likely to be further impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite being the largest minority group in the UK, very little is known about the factors that influence alcohol use and treatment for British South Asians compared to other ethnic groups.

Previous research has shown that collaboration with key figures within communities can help improve the design, delivery and uptake of health interventions. We are consulting health professionals that work with British South Asian communities, as well as faith leaders and community members to gather important perspectives on alcohol use and treatment. This study will help improve alcohol services and support to better address the needs of the diverse UK population.

WHAT do you mean by community figures?

Community figures refers to anyone who identifies as belonging to a South Asian/ British South Asian community who is not experiencing alcohol-related problems or is a non drinker. It also refers or health professionals or faith leaders who work with these communities. The following list includes some examples:

Staff working in community support services (such as Change Grow Live or AA)

Staff working in hospital Gastroenterology, Hepatology or Alcohol Liaison teams

Group leaders from Hindu, Sikh and Muslim places of worship.

How can I help?

If you belong to or work with a South Asian community, we’d like to speak with you and hear about your experiences. You can help us better understand how to improve interventions and support for alcohol use.

We’ll arrange a time to speak with you at your convenience. This can be over the phone or online video. If COVID regulations permit, it could also be face to face. You’ll be asked about several topics including:

  • Your perception of alcohol use within your community (including preferences for support, and problems that may be experienced because of alcohol use)

  • The use of health, social and faith services for alcohol problems

  • Your perspectives on available and new alcohol treatments

  • How COVID-19 may have impacted on any of the above

All answers will be completely confidential.

WHAT'S in it for ME?

Your contribution will help improve the future treatment of people with alcohol problems
You will be offered a £10 voucher to thank you for your participation in the study.
